Roofing Services in Shively

Most houses in Shively went up in the 1950s and 1960s. Census Bureau survey data puts the typical home's build year at 1958. A house that age has stood through close to 70 years of Kentucky weather. Curling shingles and a stained ceiling are common signs of a worn roof.

Dillon Roofing and Remodeling is a roofing contractor, and Shively is part of our service area around Louisville. We do roof repair and roof replacement on homes across Shively. If you just want to know where your roof stands, a roof inspection answers that. Call or text (502) 817-7791, and we will look at the roof and put the quote in writing.

Roofs on Shively's 1950s and 1960s Homes

Shively became a city in 1938, when its whiskey distilleries pushed residents to incorporate and avoid annexation by Louisville. The city's history page says Shively was the fastest-growing city in the state in the 1950s. Its population peaked at 19,223 in 1970. The 2020 Census counted 15,636 people on about 4.6 square miles.

The Census Bureau's survey shows what that growth built. About 44 percent of Shively's homes date to the 1950s, and more than one in five to the 1960s. Fewer than 3 in 100 went up in 2000 or later. About 7 in 10 are detached single-family houses.

A shingle roof wears out well before the house does. The home inspectors' association puts a typical life at about 20 years for 3-tab shingles and 30 for architectural ones. By that guideline, a house built in 1958 has likely outlasted more than one roof. When wear shows across the whole roof, roof replacement is usually a better fit than another patch.

What Does Kentucky Weather Do to a Shively Roof?

NOAA's storm records name Shively itself. Golf ball sized hail fell near Shively on May 9, 2023. From 2015 through 2024, the records list a dozen thunderstorm wind reports near town, with gusts estimated near 60 mph. Several describe trees down, and one lists trees on three houses in August 2016.

NOAA also keeps a long-term weather record at Louisville's airport, about 4 miles east of Shively. Its 1991 to 2020 normals show about 48 inches of rain and melted snow in a typical year. May is the wettest month, at just over 5 inches. The same normals count about 43 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter and 74 at freezing or colder.

The roofing contractors' national association suggests inspecting a roof each spring and fall, and again after a hailstorm. Wind-driven rain finds lifted shingle edges and cracked flashing first. The drip inside can show up far from where the water gets in. If water is already coming through, see our page on finding and fixing a roof leak.

Permits and City Rules for Roof Work in Shively

The Kentucky Residential Code leaves permits for a single-family home to local ordinance. Shively is its own city inside Jefferson County, and it adds a first step. When a project calls for a building permit, the city issues a Compliance Certificate. Louisville Metro then issues the permit itself.

The city's form says it plainly: the Compliance Certificate is not a building permit. Whether a roof job needs a permit at all depends on the work. Structural repairs are the usual reason to ask. City Hall on Dixie Highway and Louisville Metro answer that question, and we point you there.

Questions We Hear Around Shively

A few of the questions we hear most around Shively. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (502) 817-7791

Is Shively part of your service area?
Yes. Shively is part of our service area, along with Louisville and the rest of Jefferson County. We also work in Bullitt and Oldham Counties. Call or text (502) 817-7791 to set up a look at your roof.
What does a new roof cost on a house in Shively?
Roof size and pitch drive most of the price. The number of old layers to tear off matters too, and so does the wood deck underneath. On a house built in the 1950s, that deck is worth a close look. We put the price in a written quote before any work starts.
Can old shingles go out with Shively's bulky pickup?
The city's public works page says bulky pickup does not take excessive building materials. Those go to a drop-off site the city names, where fees apply. Shively's code enforcement page also lists excessive debris or building materials among its common violations. Ask how the old roof leaves the property when you compare written quotes.
Can new shingles go over the old roof on my Shively house?
Sometimes, but the Kentucky Residential Code sets limits. It does not allow a new layer over a roof that already has two or more layers. A roof too worn to hold another layer is out as well. On a 1950s house, the number of layers up there now shapes the job and the written quote.
What should I check after a storm passes through Shively?
Stay on the ground and look up. The roofing contractors' national association tells homeowners to check storm damage from ground level. Look for shingle pieces in the yard and new stains on the ceilings. Then call or text (502) 817-7791 to set up a look at the roof.
