On November 18, 2017, a line of storms crossed Shepherdsville with gusts estimated near 60 mph. A National Weather Service survey traced about 11 miles of damage from Shepherdsville to Mount Washington, mostly along Highway 44. Trees came down, and several buildings had shingle damage. A lifted or missing shingle opens a path for the next rain.

Shepherdsville has grown fast. The Census counted 8,334 residents in 2000 and 14,201 in 2020, a gain of about 70 percent. Census survey data puts the median home here at a 1996 build year. About three in ten homes went up in the 1990s, and just over one in four in the 2000s.
If a 1990s house still has its first roof, those shingles have weathered about 30 summers. About one in five homes here is older still, built before 1980. Over time, shingles shed granules, and their edges can curl. A roof inspection is a good first step on an older roof.
New homes keep going up, too. Census permit data shows Bullitt County authorized 320 new single-family homes in 2024 and 242 in 2025. In Shepherdsville, about one in eight homes was built in 2010 or later. For builders, we handle new construction roofing across our service area.
NOAA's storm database shows how often strong wind reaches this county. From January 2016 to June 2026, it lists 75 thunderstorm wind reports in Bullitt County. The year 2025 alone brought 24 of them. Kentucky's residential code sets a design wind speed of 115 mph for every county, Bullitt included.
Falling trees add to the risk. In June 2023, wind dropped a tree on Cedar Grove Road, and another fell nearby in June 2025. If a limb lands on your roof, have it checked even when the shingles look fine from the ground.
After a strong storm, look at the roof from the ground. Missing shingles or lifted edges are signs of wind damage. Inside, check the ceilings for new stains. Then call or text us, and we will take a look.
Heavy rain is the other test. In February 2018, the Salt River at Shepherdsville crested about three feet above flood stage. High water closed Preston Highway downtown.
NOAA put rain totals for the second half of that month at 8 to 9 inches across central Kentucky. In April 2025, the city posted a flood watch and warned residents to expect major flooding. Later that month, the city moved a park event elsewhere after flooding in the park.
Rain like that finds weak spots in a roof, and a ceiling stain is often the first sign. Our roof leak repair work starts with finding where the water gets in. That spot is often not right above the stain.
The City of Shepherdsville points planning and zoning questions to Bullitt County Planning and Development. That county office issues building permits. Its permit page says a building permit is required to construct, enlarge, alter or repair a building.
Whether a roof replacement counts as repair is the county's call. Once a permit is issued, the county says to contact Code Enforcement to schedule inspections. The county office answers the permit question for your house, and we point you there.
One city rule touches the roof directly. Shepherdsville's Wastewater Department does not allow gutter downspouts or roof drains to connect to the sanitary sewer. Questions about a downspout connection go to that department. The city's stormwater page suggests rain barrels or rain gardens to slow runoff at home.
