Lyndon is a city of big shade trees and older houses. It was named a Tree City USA in 2001. Each fall, the city picks up leaves at the curb twice. Before that, the same leaves pack into roof valleys and gutters, where they hold water against the shingles.

Lyndon started as a stop on the railroad. A depot opened here in 1871, and an electric interurban line later ran out La Grange Road. That line quit in 1934, and Lyndon became a city in 1965.
Census survey data puts about four in ten Lyndon houses in the 1980s and 1990s. More than a quarter went up in the 1940s and 1950s. Close to half of all homes in the city sit in buildings with two or more units.
On a house that age, the roof may be the first one or a later replacement. If you do not know how old yours is, start with a roof inspection. It shows where the roof stands before you choose between a repair and a new roof.
Big trees over a house are hard on its roof. Branches that rub the shingles scrape off the granules that shield them from the sun. Shade keeps a roof damp after rain, and moss can take hold. In a storm, a falling limb can tear shingles loose or break through the roof deck.
A slow leak under a tree line can soak the roof deck before any stain shows on a ceiling. Roof leak repair starts with finding where the water gets in. That spot is often not right above the stain.
Once roof water leaves the downspouts, the drainage rules take over. MSD handles public drainage in Lyndon, and drainage that crosses only one or two lots stays with the owners. The city also asks owners to keep utility easements clear of debris. MSD runs a program to disconnect downspouts that drain into the sewer line.
Lyndon adopted the Kentucky Building Code into its city code. The city extends those state rules to every single-family home built or remodeled here. Its code also says no one may build or develop property in Lyndon without a county permit.
City Hall issues a letter of compliance to each person who applies for a permit. The letter checks a project against city ordinances and deed restrictions. The city's own form says the letter is not a building permit. Louisville Metro issues that permit, and it has to be in hand before the project starts.
For a new home, plans go to the City Clerk at least 30 days before work begins. Builders can read about our new construction roofing for homes going up in the area. For a roof repair or a roof replacement, ask City Hall and Louisville Metro what your project needs. We point you there before the work starts.
