Census survey data puts the median year built for Mount Washington homes at 2002. Nearly half of the town's homes went up between 1990 and 2009. If a house from 2002 still has its original roof, that roof is more than 20 years old. Wind adds wear, and a 2017 weather service survey found shingle damage along Highway 44 near town.

Mount Washington's population nearly doubled in the 2010s. The 2020 Census counted 18,090 people, up from 9,117 in 2010. The Census Bureau's estimate for July 2025 is 18,989.
Housing follows the same pattern. Of about 7,200 homes in the latest Census survey, nearly 3 in 4 were built in 1990 or later. About 1 in 4 went up in 2010 or later, and fewer than 1 in 5 were built before 1980.
About 82 percent of homes here are single-family detached houses, and owners live in about 86 percent of occupied homes. A first roof on a house from the 1990s is now more than 25 years old. A roof inspection shows what shape that roof is in before you plan the next step.
On November 18, 2017, a storm left a swath of wind damage from Shepherdsville to Mount Washington. The National Weather Service traced a path about 11 miles long and 2 miles wide. Most of the damage sat along either side of Highway 44. The survey found downed trees and several buildings with carport and shingle damage.
Wind returned on the night of March 15, 2026. A weather service survey estimated peak winds of 75 mph southwest of town. Storm reports that night described roof damage and fallen trees near Mount Washington.
After a windstorm, look for shingle pieces in the yard and new stains on a ceiling. Torn or missing shingles call for roof repair. Water coming inside calls for roof leak repair, and the source is often not right above the stain.
Kentucky leaves permits for single-family homes to local ordinance. Inside city limits, the City of Mount Washington's Department of Building Codes reviews and inspects construction. For houses, it works from the Kentucky Residential Code. A residential building permit starts with a zoning compliance certificate from Bullitt County Planning and Zoning.
The city's residential application lists new homes, additions, decks and other projects. It has no box for roofing. Ask the Department of Building Codes whether your roof replacement needs a permit before work starts. That office answers the question, and we point you there.
Old roofing that comes off a house often goes into a roll-off dumpster. The same city office handles temporary dumpster permits. Each permit runs 14 days and can be extended to 28 days at most in one calendar year.
Part of the 40047 ZIP code lies outside city limits. For an address out there, check which county office covers it before work starts.
Homebuilding kept going here after 2010. The latest Census survey counts about 1,540 homes from the 2010s. About 310 more went up in 2020 or later.
On a new house in the city, the builder's permit runs through the Department of Building Codes. Its permit steps for a new single-family home include a stamped land survey. The water meter and sewer tap are bought at the same time as the building permit.
